A plug-in hybrid on a long trip is a different problem from either a petrol car or an EV, and it's the one people prepare for least well. The reason is simple: if you've been commuting on electric all year, your engine has done very few miles — and an engine that rarely runs is not the same as an engine that's barely worn.

Engine Oil Degrades by Time, Not Just Mileage

This is the big one for PHEVs. You might have covered 4,000 miles since the last service and assume the oil is nearly new. It probably isn't.

Short electric-assisted journeys mean the engine often starts, runs briefly, and stops before it reaches full operating temperature. Combustion produces water; a hot engine boils it off; a cold one doesn't. So moisture and unburnt fuel accumulate in the sump, diluting the oil and dropping its protective quality. You end up with oil that looks fine on the dipstick and has been quietly degrading for a year.

Most PHEV handbooks specify a time-based interval — commonly 12 months — precisely for this reason. Before a long trip where the engine will finally do sustained high-load work, oil condition matters more than the odometer suggests. If it's near the time limit, change it before you go rather than after.

Fuel That's Been Sitting

Petrol has a shelf life. Modern pump fuel with ethanol content starts losing its lighter fractions after roughly three months, and ethanol attracts water. A PHEV owner who charges nightly can easily run a tank for six months or more.

Stale fuel gives poor starting, rough running and hesitation — exactly what you don't want on an overtake with a loaded car. If the fuel in the tank is older than a few months, run it down and refill before the trip rather than topping up on top of it.

Brake Fluid: Same Problem as an EV, Same Surprise

PHEVs use regenerative braking too, so the friction brakes see little work and the fluid absorbs moisture over years without anyone inspecting it. Everything in the EV version of this applies to you: wet fluid, long descent, soft pedal.

There's an extra wrinkle. Because the calipers are used so lightly, sliders and pistons seize more often on hybrids than on conventional cars — the mechanism corrodes rather than wears. A binding caliper on a 300-mile motorway run gets hot enough to cook the pad and warp the disc. Worth having the brakes inspected properly, not just glanced at.

Two Cooling Circuits, Twice the Places to Be Low

A PHEV has an engine cooling system and a separate battery thermal circuit, sometimes a third for the power electronics. Each has its own expansion tank, and they take different fluid.

Check both when cold. The engine circuit is the one that's been sitting mostly unused, and that's exactly where a slow leak goes unnoticed — an engine that only runs twenty minutes a week won't overheat at home, but it will on the M5 in August with the air con on.

Tyres and the 12V Battery

PHEVs carry battery weight and an engine, so they're often heavier than either equivalent — check tread across the full width, set pressures for a loaded car, and look at the sidewall date codes.

The 12V battery deserves the same load test an EV's does, and for a similar reason: it runs the systems that let the car start at all, and hybrid duty cycles are hard on it.

Give the Engine a Proper Run First

The single most useful thing you can do the week before is drive 20–30 minutes on the engine, at motorway speed, deliberately. Force a hold-charge or battery-save mode if your car has one. It burns off accumulated moisture, circulates oil properly, and — crucially — surfaces any fault while you're still near home rather than 200 miles into the journey.

The Pre-Trip List

  • Engine oil condition and date of last change, not just the mileage
  • Fuel age — run down and refill if it's been sitting months
  • Brake fluid moisture tested, calipers checked for binding
  • Both coolant circuits checked cold
  • Tyre tread across full width, pressures for a loaded car, sidewall dates
  • 12V battery load tested
  • A deliberate 20–30 minute engine run a week before you go
  • Hybrid battery health checked if the electric range has been dropping

The Bottom Line

The PHEV trap is assuming low mileage means low wear. Time-based degradation — oil, fuel, brake fluid, seized calipers — does the damage instead, and a long trip is precisely when the engine gets asked to do everything it hasn't done all year. Check the time-based items, not the distance-based ones.
